Hospitality in the Christian Home
Offering hospitality does not need to be a grand effort . Christian hospitality is nothing more than making someone feel welcome and sharing whatever resources you have available. Whether you enjoy a large gathering or prefer visiting one-on-one, the Bible admonishes us to reach out to others. It’s so hard in today’s isolated world to meet and greet your neighbors. Sometimes all we get is a quick wave as we pass on the street. We should not be waiting for others to reach out to us. As Christians, we should make every effort to connect with the people God has placed within our sphere of influence.
Hospitality Tips and Tricks
“And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves; for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without grudging. As every man hath received the gift, even so, minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves:”
1 Peter 4:8-10
Entertaining is a tricky thing. The Bible commands us to offer our homes and services to others, but we must be careful to do so humbly. Avoid the sin of pride. Ok… that’s tricky. We should take “pride” in our work. So what do we mean by “avoid the sin of pride”? We must never give into the temptation to “keep up with the Jones” or try to give the impression we are “grander” than we really are. Be real. Offer up what you have. Give more of yourself, than “stuff.” Guests remember the time spent with you more than they remember the meal or the condition of your house.
Guard against being a “Martha”. Our homes should be clean, but not at the expense of more important things in our lives.
- The important thing is that you love and serve your guest, not that you impress them with your immaculate house and gourmet meals.
- Share what you are able, and do not apologize for it. If it’s your best, it’s enough!
- Plan ahead so you are not caught unprepared.
- Serving or hosting others takes many forms. It does not always require inviting someone into your home.
